About GeoTIFF files

GeoTIFF files are special kinds of TIFF images for storing geographic images. Unlike regular TIFF files, GeoTIFF files contain information about the geographic coordinates that each pixel maps to. In this way Magic Maps can know where to place an imported GeoTIFF file onto an existing map.

GeoTIFF files come in two flavors:

  1. Standard GeoTIFF files are TIFF files that include the geographic information inside the image file itself
  2. "TIFF + world" is a TIFF file accompanied by a "world file", which has the file extension .tfw

Magic Maps can open all GeoTIFF files that include a world file, and many GeoTIFF files that do not include a world file. If your GeoTIFF file is not supported by Magic Maps, please visit the Magic Maps mailing list to request support.

Note that Magic Maps can only import GeoTIFF files with image data; "floating-point" GeoTIFF files are not currently supported.
